Chartering a Crewed Yacht in Greece – Our Process
Chartering a crewed yacht in Greece is simpler than it looks.
Behind the scenes, there’s a structured process. But for you, it should feel seamless, personal, and completely taken care of.
Here’s how it actually works, from first inquiry to stepping off the yacht.
You Tell Us What You Want – Share Your Vision
Everything starts with your preferences.
You tell us about the:
- Dates (or flexible range)
- Number of guests
- Budget range
- Type of yacht (catamaran, motor yacht, sailing yacht)
- Style of experience (relaxed, family, party, luxury, etc.)
- Preferred destinations (Cyclades, Ionian, Saronic, etc.)
At this stage, nothing is booked yet. The goal is to match you with the right yacht and crew, not just availability.
Yacht Selection & Shortlist
A charter specialist curates options based on your request and sends you a proposal with:
- A shortlist of yachts
- Photos, specs, and real availability
- Crew profiles
- Weekly charter rates
- What’s included vs excluded
Important:
Two yachts can look similar online but offer completely different experiences.
The crew and condition of the yacht matter just as much as the price.
Proposal & Booking Terms
Once you choose a yacht, you receive a formal offer that includes:
- Charter fee (weekly rate)
- VAT (in Greece typically applied on top)
- APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance)
- Contract type (usually MYBA or similar industry standard like MIBA)
What is APA?
The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) for a yacht charter is typically 25% to 40% of the base charter fee.
Think of APA as a prepaid onboard budget. It usually covers:
- Food and drinks
- Fuel
- Port fees and marinas
- Water toys fuel
- Any extras during your trip
The captain manages this budget and provides full accounting.
Signing the Charter Contract (MIBA / MYBA)
This is where things become official.
You sign a Memorandum of Agreement between:
- The yacht owner
- You (the charterer)
- The broker (as intermediary)
The contract defines:
- Charter dates and location
- Payment schedule
- Cancellation terms
- What is included/excluded
- Responsibilities of each party
These contracts are industry-standard and designed to protect both sides.
Key idea:
You are not just “booking”, you are entering a legal charter agreement for temporary use of a vessel with crew.
5. Payment Schedule
Typical structure:
- 50% deposit → to secure the yacht
- 50% balance → due ~30–45 days before charter
- APA (20–40%) → paid before embarkation
If payments are not made on time, the contract can become void.
Preference Sheet (Very Important)
After booking, you fill out a detailed preference sheet. This is what turns a good charter into a great one.
You specify:
- Food preferences and dietary needs
- Alcohol brands
- Activities (water sports, hiking, beach clubs)
- Special occasions (birthdays, celebrations)
- Cabin setup
The crew uses this to prepare everything before you arrive.
Pre-Charter Preparation
Before you step onboard:
- Berths and marina spots are pre-arranged where needed
- The yacht is cleaned, stocked, and fully prepared
- Food, drinks, and fuel are purchased using APA
- The captain plans a flexible itinerary based on weather
Embarkation Day (Check-In)
You arrive at the marina (usually Athens, Mykonos, or another base).
What happens:
- You meet the crew
- Quick safety briefing
- Overview of the yacht and itinerary
- APA confirmation and any last details
Then your charter officially begins.
During the Charter
This is the experience itself.
- The captain manages navigation and safety
- The chef prepares meals tailored to you
- The crew handles service, cleaning, and activities
Please note:
- You can adjust itinerary daily
- The captain follows your preferences but always has final authority for safety and weather decisions
Expenses & APA Management
Throughout the trip:
- All running costs are paid from APA
- The captain tracks every expense
At the end:
- If you spend less → you get refunded
- If you exceed → you settle the difference
This keeps everything transparent and flexible.
Disembarkation (Check-Out)
At the end of your charter:
- Final APA accounts are reviewed
- Any outstanding balance is settled
- You leave the yacht
The contract formally ends once the yacht is returned in agreed condition and time.
What Makes a MIBA / MYBA Charter Different?
Compared to simple boat rentals:
1. Structured & Protected
You’re covered by a standardized legal agreement used globally in luxury yachting.
2. Fully Custom Experience
Everything is tailored—route, food, pace, activities.
3. Crew-Driven
The quality of your experience depends heavily on the crew, not just the yacht.
4. Transparent Costs
- Charter fee = yacht + crew
- APA = running expenses
- VAT = government tax
No hidden surprises if properly explained upfront.
Simple Summary
- Final expenses are settled at the end
- You choose a yacht with expert help
- You sign a formal charter contract
- You pay in stages (deposit, balance, APA)
- The crew prepares everything based on your preferences
- You enjoy a fully customized experience in Greece
